Venture builder, consultancy, lab or CVC: who carries the risk?
Pick by the deliverable you need. A consultancy answers a question. A lab explores a theme. A CVC fund buys exposure to other people's startups. A venture builder creates your company with you and shares the execution risk.
Start from your situation.
Venture builder
You already have the belief. What you lack is a team that will carry it to a venture and share the risk of it failing.
The four options side by side.
| Innovation consultancy | Internal innovation lab | Corporate VC fund | Venture builder | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| What you end up with | A recommendation: strategy, opportunity map, roadmap | Prototypes, pilots and activity | Minority stakes in other people's startups | A venture that stands alone, or an evidenced build/don't-build verdict |
| Who carries execution risk | You, once the final presentation ends | You | The startup's founders | Shared with embedded operators |
| How it uses your assets | Analyses them from outside | From inside, exposed to corporate antibodies | Rarely: the startup brings its own | Built on them by design: your customers, data and distribution |
| When it ends | At the final presentation | With the annual budget cycle | At exit or write-off | When the venture has its own team, model and momentum |
| Best when | The question is analytical: sizing, portfolio, diligence | You want to explore a theme and build internal capability | You want exposure to a market, not capability in it | You hold a conviction and need a company out of it |
These options combine. A lab can feed a builder its best bets; a CVC fund can co-invest in a venture once it spins out. For the two that get confused most, read venture builder or innovation consultancy?
Before you choose.
We already have a consultancy on retainer. Why add a venture builder?
Ask what happens if the venture fails. If the answer is a lessons-learned document, you bought advice, not a business. Keep the consultancy for analytical questions; bring in a builder when the answer needs to become a company.
Can a venture builder work alongside our innovation lab?
Yes. Labs are good at surfacing beliefs and running experiments. A builder takes the strongest belief through a build/don't-build gate and on to a company, with the lab rather than around it.
Is a venture builder the same as a venture studio?
Not quite. A studio builds its own companies; a corporate venture builder builds yours, on your assets. Limineer does both.
